Last week I visited Malaysia as a guest of top notch events and travel company Epic Voyage. After months of planning (of which I had little to do with – thank you Ali and Lee!) Ali, Walter and I started our epic voyage with an epic 22 hour flight from NYC to Kuala Lumpur via Hong Kong. Arriving at noon 2 days after we took off and battling a 12 hour time change we hit the ground running with a press conference about our upcoming schedule and multiple interviews to really rev up the pace. As you know I have traveled the world but I must say that Asian countries and Malaysia is up there at the top, are the most hospitable. Our hosts at Epic Voyage organized massages for us on 4 separate occasions for my whole team and were always conscious of comfort level. The kind of attention to detail you would hope for when booking a holiday – but we were working!

On day 2 we flew to the magical resort of Tanjung Rhu, on the island of Langkawi. A 5 star dream resort where we were to conduct the first of our limited photography masterclasses. Each class consisted of no more then 25 people who had flown in from all over the region ( Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and China) to attend the classes. The themes of the classes too were both broad and focused from “Changing hearts and minds” to “lighting techniques in studio and on location”. So both the philosophical and technical sides of image making. I was in my element and with such small classes I was able to have one on one time with everyone, not to mention the daily field trips around Langkawi to places like Warrior Island and Gorilla Mountain! Once again I want to mention how lovely everyone was at Tanjung Rhu, the food was delicious and surroundings including the Spa were stellar. If this was working then shackle me now….

After two days on Langkawi we flew back to Kuala Lumpur and that evening had a book signing at Kino books which went extremely well. It’s truly a wonderful feeling to travel to the ends of the earth and find people everywhere moved and inspired by the Beauty Equation.

Our final day culminated with a masterclass at the Ritz Carlton in KL with over 200 participants. Which obviously well over the 25 participants in Langkawi was still full of energy and we touched on topics like the Art of Advertising, portraiture and the business behind the image.

I want to say a huge thank you to Lee Adelaine and Wan Anwar Rahman from Epic Voyage and to all our new friends in Malaysia. We are already planning a return trip and similar events with Epic to the rest of the region. So if you’d like us to come to your neck of the woods lets us know!
Oh and one more thing – when we were in Langkawi we witnessed a sighting of the rare Squidrell, truly a sight to behold…..
